Are you somebody who does what you want to do?

If you are, big props, you are not the majority.

Most people, for some ungodly reason, don’t seem to think that everybody, including themselves, should be allowed to do what they want to do. Most people think that doing what you want means that people will only do bad things.

Where do they get this ridiculous notion? Well, they watch movies and the news channels, and they focus on those people who are doing what they want to the detriment of society. They very conveniently ignore those people who are doing what they want that benefits the world.

Personally, I simply advocate doing what you want. Full stop.

I would like to adjust that statement to: Do what you really want.

Too many people don’t actually know what they want. Not really. They know what society wants from them, they know what their employer wants from them, they know what their spouses want from them, they know what their mother wants from them, but they far too often put their own desires at the bottom of this list and barely give it as much attention as what other people want.

If you relate to the above, it might be time to take your own preferences into consideration, and make those desires more of a priority. Start doing more of what you want, and less of what you don’t want.

Let’s pretend for a moment that you did do what you wanted to do. Wouldn’t you do something kind? Wouldn’t you enjoy yourself in a responsible and considerate manner? You probably would help more people and make your world a better place, wouldn’t you?

Why then don’t you do what you want, and why would you criticise people who do what they want? You wouldn’t, I would wager.

Let people be. Let them make choices for themselves. And let yourself choose for yourself, too. Act from love, and you will find that what you want to do benefits everyone.

The other objection some people have with this advice is that they think it’s selfish.

Well, they’d be right. Being selfish is the best thing you can do for yourself. If everyone was lovingly selfish, this world would be even more amazing than it is, not worse off.

In fact, many of the amazing developments in this world have come from people being selfishly true to themselves.

Let’s get over this bullshit falacy that you can’t or shouldn’t do what you want. Treat yourself better by doing the things you enjoy. Do the work you enjoy. Spend time with the people you enjoy. Do nothing all day if that’s what you enjoy. Because what you enjoy is what you want, so let there be more of that in your life.
